The Sir John Fisher Foundation is a charitable trust (UK registered charity number 277844), established in 1980 by Sir John and Lady Maria Fisher. The Foundation’s objective is to distribute its income to charitable causes, throughout the UK, but with special regard to those based in and working for the benefit of people living in Barrow-in-Furness and the Furness Peninsula.
PLEASE NOTE GRANT APPLICATION DEADLINE OF 1st March 2019 HAS NOW PASSED.
The Foundation supports charitable causes particularly in the six categories of Maritime, Medical and Disability, Education, Music, Arts and Community projects in Barrow-in-Furness and the Furness Peninsula.
There are two Trustees meetings per year to allocate grants, at the beginning of May and November. Closing dates for applications are on the How to apply and Feedback page.
What We Fund
There is no general limit to the grant which can be awarded to any one project. Most grants given are for less than £20,000. In the past, the Trustees have given larger grants to major one-off projects or for research projects over defined periods.
The Trustees are in appropriate cases willing to express an intention to commit funds for up to three years, if it can be shown that substantial benefit will result from an extended period of funding. An intention to commit funds for future years is always subject to funds being available at the time.
The Foundation gives priority to applying its income to projects and causes based in Barrow-in-Furness and the Furness Peninsula. Exceptionally, occasional community projects from the remainder of Cumbria and North Lancashire will be considered. Some projects are supported nationally, particularly Maritime projects and a few educational Music projects.
